International Women’s Day Celebrated Saturday

International Women’s Day (IWD) will be celebrated this Saturday across the world. According to the IWD website, this year marks the 97th annual celebration. Counties including Armenia, Russia, and Vietnam recognize IWD as an official holiday, but hundreds of celebrations happen all over the world on March 8th.

Two upcoming conferences in Washington DC correspond with IWD. Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) is sponsoring the National Young Women’s Leadership Conference on Saturday and Sunday. FMF expects 200 students from all over the US to attend. Speakers and workshops will focus on issues such as reproductive rights, the environment, violence against women, war, and the importance of the young women’s vote. Kiani was still stoned to death on July 5, 2007. Ebrahimi’s death was stayed due to the public outcry, and last week the Iranian judiciary amnesty commission released her from prison.

The National Council of Women’s Organizations (NCWO) along with the Younger Women’s Task Force will be hosting the Women’s Equality Summit and Congressional Action Day on Monday and Tuesday. The Summit brings hundreds of women”s organizations together for briefings, training sessions, and meetings with Members of Congress.

The United Nation’s 52nd Commission on the Status of Women ends today. The Commission focused on financing for gender equality and the empowerment of women. The Secretary General announced his program to end violence against women at the Commission.
