Japanese Court Issues Record Sexual Harassment Award

A Japanese doctoral student who alleged that her professor repeated pressured her for sex and punished her when she refused today won a record sexual harassment award of 7.5 million yen ($60,483 U.S. dollars).

The case was heard in a district court by presiding Judge Noriyuki Abe. The plaintiff testified that the defendant, an assistant professor who supervised her academic work, repeatedly pressured her for sex and punished her when she refused by following her around and ordering endless re-writes of her theses. The alleged sexual harassment occurred between April and August 1995.
