Kerry Would Consider Appointing Anti-Abortion Judges

In an interview on Wednesday, Senator John Kerry (D-MA), the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, said that he would consider nominating anti-abortion judges to “some” federal courts. Kerry told the Associated Press, “I will not appoint somebody with a 5-4 court who’s about to undo Roe v. Wade. I’ve said that before É But that doesn’t mean if that’s not the balance of the court I wouldn’t be prepared ultimately to appoint somebody to some court who has a different point of view.” Kerry later issued a statement emphasizing that he would only appoint judges to the Supreme Court who supported abortion rights. However, he left open the possibility of appointing anti-abortion judges to some lower federal courts, AP reports. The federal courts are already being stacked with right-wing, anti-abortion, anti-women’s rights, and anti-civil rights judges “I am profoundly disappointed that after more than one million women and men marched on Washington, DC in support of reproductive rights that Senator Kerry never mentions the March or acknowledges the importance of the historic event,” said Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority. “He is sending a very confusing message about the importance of reproductive rights. Women’s fundamental rights should not be used as a means of moderating a candidate’s tone for the general elections.” DONATE to stop the right-wing assault on the federal courts
