LA Passes Onerous Clinic Law

The Louisiana House voted yesterday to approve and send to Governor Mike Foster a bill that would require outpatient abortion clinics to be licensed by the state Department of Health and Hospitals. Under the bill, the Department of Health and Hospitals will develop license standards for outpatient abortion clinics, and clinics will have to pay a yearly license fee and undergo yearly inspections. This bill treats outpatient abortion clinics like ambulatory surgery centers rather than like doctor’s offices that perform minor outpatient surgery, and could prohibitively raise costs for state clinics. A legal challenge to the bill is expected.
