Lead Attorney in Kopp Investigation Forced to Resign

According to a WomensEnews.org story by Cynthia L. Cooper, President Bush has fired the attorney who led the investigation into the assassination of Dr. Barnett Slepian and who coordinated the international law enforcement that led to the identification, indictment and arrest of Dr. Slepian’s killer–James Kopp. U.S. Attorney Denise O’Donnell was the first woman to hold that post in the western district of New York state. U.S. Attorneys are appointed by the President, but their terms do not end with an election. In past administrations, both Democratic and Republican, U.S. attorneys have been allowed to complete their terms. Both President Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft are staunchly anti-abortion, but Ashcroft has promised to pursue Kopp’s prosecution.
