Giving Securities

Gifts of unrestricted publicly traded securities (including stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other securities) can entitle the donor to potentially significant tax benefits. The donor bypasses capital gains taxes, and if appreciated securities have been held long-term, an income tax deduction based on their fair market value is available up to 30% of adjusted gross income, and any unused deduction may be carried forward for up to five years. This often reduces significantly the after-tax cost of a donation. Your attorney can help determine the best way to give securities for maximum tax benefits.
