The GOP is pushing a bill that would require federally-funded abortion clinics to talk about adoption when counseling pregnant women. This measure would allocate $7 million in grants for adoption groups. Grant recipients would train health counselors in abortion clinics and other health organizations that counsel pregnant women.
Commerce Committee Chairman Tom Bliley (R-VA), said, “We have a duty to inform young women about the adoption option. If we don’t, fewer women will choose adoption.”
But a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood noted that counselors presently do discuss adoption and that “the anti-abortion forces would have everyone think that we force abortion, that if you walk in for a pap smear they say, Why not have an abortion instead?”
