Mother’s Day Celebrations Planned for Poor, Homeless

Women’s and volunteer organizations across the country are planned special celebrations to honor poor and homeless mothers this Mother’s Day, May 9.

The Women’s Lunch Place of Boston will sponsor an elegant lunch, music and dancing for women and their children. San Francisco’s Hamilton Family Center, an emergency shelter for women, will offer women free make-overs and brunch at a downtown restaurant. Free child care will also be provided for the women’s children. Philadelphia’s Mary Jane Home Enrichment Center will host a Mother’s Day dinner for 65 women. Several of the invitees will read poems that they have written in honor of motherhood.

Volunteers of America will hold 22 “I Remember Mama” luncheons for older, low-income women in cities across the U.S. At the group’s luncheon in Boston, translators will be provided for the Chinese, Hispanic, and Russian women who are expected to attend.
