Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will both receive today the first batch of signed petitions from women who have had abortions, a project initiated by Ms. magazine. The “We Had Abortions” petition, featured in the Fall 2006 issue of Ms., serves as an opportunity for women to publicly declare that they have had abortions and can personally attest to the necessity for safe, legal, and accessible abortion and birth control.
Thousands of women have publicly declared that they have had abortions, and thousands more have stood with their “sisters” in support of full reproductive rights. The signatories come from all 50 states, from big cities and small, and cover a wide range of ages and walks of life. By signing the petition, these women show their gratitude for having been able to make the choice to have an abortion, and a desire to preserve that legal right for coming generations.
“Women who have had abortions are speaking out once again to remind everyone of the need for legal abortion for real women, their families, and their lives,” said Eleanor Smeal, publisher of Ms. magazine. “Ms. has been overwhelmed with the response to the “We Had Abortions” program. Women thanked Ms. for the opportunity to tell their stories and for the knowledge that they are not alone. Behind every decision to terminate a pregnancy stands a woman, or even a young girl, with a unique story.”
