NARAL and Boston Globe Endorse Pro-Choice Candidate in Mass. Congressional Race

As Boston’s 9th Congressional district gears up for a special Democratic primary on September 11th, progressive groups and newspapers have come out in support of 9-year Massachusetts state Senator, Cheryl Jacques. Jacques, a lesbian and former prosecutor from Needham, MA, has received the endorsement of the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) as well as the Boston Globe. In efforts to supplement its endorsement, NARAL has begun airing 60-second radio spots highlighting the strong reproductive rights record of Jacque and criticizing the dismal record of Jacques’ opponent. Describing Jacque as a “principled progressive” the Boston Globe endorsed Jacques on September 3rd, calling her “a trusted vote on civil rights and the environment.” In addition, the Globe went on to promote Jacque’s endorsement stating “women who gain high political office can speak with a different voice and promote an agenda that is otherwise underrepresented.” The special primary is being held in Massachusetts 9th Congressional district following the death of the district’s anti-choice representative, Joe Moakley.
