National Committee on Pay Equity Reports Wage Gap Expands

New earnings figures show that the wage gap still exists for women and people of color in spite of a thriving economy and low unemployment rates. According to 1998 earnings data released on September 30 by the Census Bureau, women still earn 73 cents on the dollar compared to men—this is down from the 74 cents on the dollar women earned last year. For blacks and Hispanics, the wage gap is even wider. Black women last year received 63 cents for every dollar earned by a white man, and Hispanic women earned 53 cents.
