New Warnings Issued to Taliban

Iran issued a new set of warnings to the Taliban on Sunday, demanding justice for the Iranian diplomats murdered in Afghanistan this past August. Included in Iran’s demands was an order for peace talks among Afghan factions.

[The] “Taliban must learn to take responsibility for its violations of international regulations or face the consequences of its actions,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi told IRNA, Iran’s official news agency.

According to Asefi, compliance with Iran’s warnings requires the Taliban to arrest and punish the killers of Iranian diplomats. He also reiterated the necessity of a peaceful end to internal conflict within Afghanistan.

“Iran’s foreign ministry is closely following developments in Afghanistan because they have direct impact on stability and security in Iran,” Asefi stated.

Tensions between Iran and Afghanistan have been mounting since the August murders. Iran currently has tens of thousands of troops on the common border it shares with Afghanistan.
