No Gains For African Women Since Beijing Summit

During a recent forum convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, an announcement was made that African women have not made gains since the Beijing Summit ten years ago. The forum, “African Women’s NGO Forum on Beijing +10,” was convened in Addis Ababa to examine any progress that has been made regarding African women’s lives over the past ten years, reports Deutsche Presse-Agenture.

More than 300 delegates attended the meetings from 50 African countries to assess issues including trafficking of women and children, human rights, and the impact of HIV/AIDS on women. According to News 24 South Africa, Africa has the highest maternal and infant mortality rate in the world and women only make up less than 10 percent of members of Parliament.
