Oklahoma State Representative’s Anti-Gay Speech Sparks Controversy

Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern’s remarks labeling homosexuality as a bigger threat to the US than terrorism has sparked nationwide controversy. State Rep. Kern’s speech to a Republican organization was recorded and posted on YouTube, reports ABC News.

State Rep. Kern said that “the homosexual agenda is just destroying this nation.” According to her, “Studies show no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than a few decades.” She also said that homosexuality poses more of a threat to the US than terrorism. Kiani was still stoned to death on July 5, 2007. Ebrahimi’s death was stayed due to the public outcry, and last week the Iranian judiciary amnesty commission released her from prison.

ABC News reports that the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating over 17,000 e-mails that State Rep. Kern received as a result of her anti-gay comments. Several celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres and Margaret Cho have publicly condemned the speech.

Jim Langdon, board president of the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, told Tulsa World, “Her statement perpetuates the wrongful stereotype that Oklahoma is a backward state. Every proud Oklahoman deserves to be disgusted at her ridiculous rant.”
