Last week, hundreds of pro-choice activists across the United States spoke out in support of safe, legal, accessible abortion with One Million Voices, a week of events commemorating the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the US Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Events ranged from screenings of the Feminist Majority’s (FM’s) new educational video “Never Go Back: The Threat to Legalized Abortion” to candlelight vigils to speak outs to rallies.
One Million Voices provided activists from FM’s Million4Roe Campaign, FMF’s Campus Leadership Program, and pro-choice activists across the nation with the opportunity to network with one another at the grassroots level. Participants in the week of events are praising the idea, stating that One Million Voices has generated new enthusiasm to conduct pro-choice activism in their communities. On the One Million Voices website, www.onemillionvoices.com, some 55 events were registered in 69 cities and 29 states across the US. One Million Voices was inspired by pro-choice Boston activists, who contacted the Feminist Majority about a benefit concert with workshops to educate their community highlighting the possibility that Roe could be overturned. Their January 27 event attracted more than 150 attendees, with ten outstanding performers, including renowned feminist slam poet Alix Olson, and workshops on issues and skills from Ôzine making to the status of abortion rights in the Supreme Court.
