Operation Save America Protests Begin

Operation Rescue’s “Operation Save America” protests began yesterday in Buffalo, NY with a church service, news conference, and evening meeting.

Today, abortion opponents will hold protests at schools and bookstores and will hold signs and distribute literature along two popular roadways. A 24-hour bible reading will begin, and a reunion dinner will be held for those who participated in Buffalo’s “Spring of Life” protests in 1992.

So far, no arrests have been made, although Operation Rescue National leader Rev. Philip “Flip” Benham has said, “We’re going to honor the law of Almighty God, no matter what the cost. Most of the New Testament was written in jail.” Benham called buffer zones “the most ridiculous things” and claimed, “We Christians have been legislated off the streets.”

Pro-choice demonstrators attended several of yesterday’s events to counter the message of Operation Rescue members. Buffalo’s Unitarian Universalist Church also held a counter-demonstration of sorts, by holding a service in defense of women’s reproductive rights, including abortion.
