Opposition-issued Visas Deemed Invalid by Taliban

The Taliban in Afghanistan announced that all visas that are not approved by the Taliban militia are invalid in the two-thirds of the nation where the fundamentalist government rules. Immigration staff said the rule was applicable to all foreigners, including aid workers, UN staff, diplomats, and journalists.

A visitor may obtain a militia-approved visa in several cities in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, as well as representative offices in New York, Bonn, and the United Arab Emirates. The purpose of the restrictions, according to the Taliban, is to have greater control over the Islamic country.

The former government of Afghanistan, now confined to a small region in northern Afghanistan, continues to operate missions around the world, although they are not recognized by the Taliban.
