Over 40,000 people participated in the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on the National Mall on Saturday. The event raised nearly $5 million for breast cancer research, education and treatment, according to the Washington Post, 75% of which will go to organizations in the Washington, DC area.
Celebrity participants included actress Cynthia Nixon, herself a breast cancer survivor. “Whether you had cancer or are close to somebody who’s had it, you want to do something,” said Nixon, adding that, “you want to show your love and support” in addition to raising money for breast cancer research.
