Pataki Urges GOP to Drop Anti-Abortion Stance

Governor and presidential hopeful George Pataki (R-NY) has once again urged the Republican party to drop an anti-abortion plank from its national platform. Pataki made a similar statement at the 1996 Republican convention and has defended his position, saying, “We should focus on what divides us from Democrats and not what divides us as Republicans.”

Newly-announced presidential contender and millionaire publisher Steve Forbes criticized Pataki’s suggestion and said that he no longer would Pataki a potential running mate. Forbes had previously urged GOP candidates to involve Pataki.

Also criticizing Pataki was Pat Buchanan, who stated that removing the anti-abortion plank from the GOP platform would “start a civil war” between Republicans.
