Pelosi Celebrates Women’s History Month

In observance of National Women’s History Month, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) released a statement honoring women who “have contributed to the progress of this country” while celebrating the advances made by women in politics today. She announced that Democratic women Members of Congress are opening the House of Representatives each legislative day during March.

“As the first woman Speaker, I am proud to join the 90 women members of the 110th Congress, the most to serve in the House and Senate in our history. And with a record number of women chairing committees in the House of Representatives, a woman’s place is truly in the House.”

Among her comments concerning the current status of American women, Pelosi acknowledged the pay gap between the sexes, as well as the large proportion of women living below the poverty line. Concluding her statements Pelosi encouraged women to be inspired by the enthusiastic words of Eleanor Roosevelt: “‘It’s up to the women!’ Let us rededicate ourselves to making progress of our own.”
