Pelosi Could Be First Female Speaker of the House

More than 200 people, including representatives from Feminist Majority, gathered in front of the Capitol building yesterday as House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other Democratic members of the House unveiled their vision for what they would do if they take control of the House. Reducing job outsourcing, improving education, and national security were some of the topics outlined in “Six Core Values for a Strong and Secure Middle Class,” as part of the “New Partnership for America’s Future.” Representative Pelosi currently holds the highest position achieved by a woman in Congress. If Democrats gain a majority of House seats in the election this November, Pelosi would become the first female Speaker of the House in 215 years. Democrats need to gain 12 new seats to obtain majority status. Massive voter registration drives are being conducted across the country in an effort to register more women voters, including the Feminist Majority Foundation’s Get Out HER Vote campaign. In the 2000 presidential election, 8 million more women voted than men.
