Pets, Not Partners, Get Benefits

While domestic partners of employees of a Florida community college do not receive any discounted group medical insurance, pets will qualify for such benefits beginning in January. Full time employees of Palm Beach Community College will get a 5 percent discount and group rates on a health insurance plans for their pets.

The decision to offer pet health care followed the failure of a measure to offer similar benefits to domestic partners in August. Neither proposal would have cost the College any money, since it only pays for employee premiums.

The Palm Beach County Human Rights, one of the area’s gay rights groups, issues a letter to college officials, saying: “A PBCC announcement that employees could insure their pets being made a mere 90 days after the PBCC announcement that employees could not insure their domestic partners is an affront to PBCC employees with domestic partners,” reports Inside Higher Ed.
