Plans for Asian Women’s College Underway

A group of world leaders have announced its plan to open a private, independent college for women in Asia. The college, to be built in Bangladesh, will focus its attention on a liberal arts education for women and attempt to recruit primarily poor rural women through special scholarships. “I see this as sort of a role model, to stress the importance of higher education for women,” said Lone Dybkjaer, a member of the European Parliament and co-chair of the support group for the Asian University for Women, which also includes officials from the United Nations Population Fund, UN Development Program, and the World Bank. The group is currently seeking funds to open the school in September 2005 in Bangladesh.
