Pro-Choice Election Victories in Virginia

Pro-choice candidates were successful in yesterday’s election, taking control of Virginia’s State Senate away from anti-choice legislators and making gains in the State House, as well. In Virginia, 84% of the candidates endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia were victorious, according to the NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia press release. “This shift will not only help us protect access to abortion services in Virginia,” said Jessica Bearden, deputy director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, in a press release, “but it will allow us to pursue commonsense legislation, such as increasing access to birth control, that will prevent unintended pregnancies and thus reduce the need for abortion.” Democratic victories in this election mark the end of ten years of Republican dominance in the Virginia State Senate. The election also offers “further evidence of a closely divided electorate as both parties gear up for next year’s presidential and U.S. Senate races,” reports the Washington Post.
