Pro-Choice Groups File Lawsuit to Stop Abortion Procedures Ban

Today, the National Abortion Federation (NAF), Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the Center for Reproductive Rights filed lawsuits to stop the implementation of a law that would ban safe, necessary abortion procedures and contains no exceptions for the health of the woman. The legislation has already passed both the House and the Senate, and it is expected that President Bush will sign it in the next week. By filing the case before the law is signed, the groups hope to “stop the ban immediately after it is signed into law” explained NAF, who is being represented by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Bans on abortion procedures such as these aim to outlaw or significantly chip away at a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal medical procedure. In 2000, the US Supreme Court overturned a similar Nebraska ban in Stenberg v. Carhart, citing the lack of a health exception.
