Professor Wins Pay Discrimination Case in Texas

A professor who filed a pay discrimination suit against the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) was awarded back pay and damages by a jury. According to the Monitor, her lawyer said that “Dr. Medrano prevailed on every issue” and that the jury found willful violation of the Equal Pay Act by UTPA.

Medrano formerly served as the dean of the university’s College of Education. According to the Daily Texan, she was demoted in 2005 in a decision that UTPA claims was part of a strategic move to make the university a “more research intensive institution.” While dean, Dr. Medrano reportedly earned between $500 and $14,300 less than her male counterparts.
