Students from across the country are traveling as far west as Alaska and as far south as Florida to come together for what will be the historic Never Go Back National Student Leadership Conference in Washington DC on Jan 22 and 23 to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
The UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance are organizing a special formal dinner and fundraising event with special guest speaker Dr. Leroy Carhart. Carhart successfully challenged Nebraska’s late term abortion ban in the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000, and with 97 percent of counties in Nebraska without abortion clinics, is one of a few keeping abortion available in the state. The group plans on using the event to not only fundraise for a large delegation to attend the Never Go Back conference, but also to educate their campus on the threats to Roe v. Wade and screen the Never Go Back video. The group has also organized a pay equity bake sale to fundraise for the conference and received campus press for this action. Check out the article in the Feminist Journalist Center.
Leadership Alliances, affiliates, and many feminist groups are receiving discretionary conference funding from their student government organizations and additional support from the Women’s Studies and progressive departments and programs. The Women’s Studies department at EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY is providing support for 10 students from the Women’s Activist Group, an FMLA affiliate, to attend the Never Go Back Student Leadership Conference. Coming all the way from Atlanta, Georgia, the SPELMAN FMLA is receiving support from their Women’s Studies department to send a delegation of 6 members to the conference. The KEENE STATE Women’s Studies department is sponsoring a delegation of 13 to attend the conference. We are thrilled to meet with all who are able to come!
The BOSTON UNIVERSITY FMLA plans on bringing a delegation to the conference. Their campus paper, the Student Underground recently covered the Never Go Back campaign.
