Remembering Paul Newman

Paul Newman’s death has been felt throughout the feminist community. He and his partner, Joanne Woodward, have supported organizations like the National Organization for Women and Ms magazine since the 1970s.

Ellie Smeal, President of the Feminist Majority Foundation, remembers Paul Newman as “a modest man who made major contributions to many causes–not the least of which was the women’s movement.” At an event she and Newman participated in several years ago, Smeal recalls that “Paul was nervous, but as usual, moved everyone in the room to take action.”

So often, the contributions of men in the women’s movement go unrecognized. On the passing of Paul Newman, the Feminist Newswire wishes to salute Paul’s significant support of the Women’s movement and of strong women.
