Right Wing Blame Terrorism on Feminists, ACLU, Lesbians, Gays

Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson blame Tuesday’s tragedies on “God’s anger” at today’s “secular and anti-Christian” America, echoing the sentiments of the militant anti-abortion group Operation Save America (OSA). “I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way – all of them who have tried to secularize America – I point the finger in their face and say, ÔYou helped this happen.’,” said Falwell on the Christian Broadcasting Network’s 700 Club. Referring to pro-choice groups such as the Feminist Majority Foundation, Falwell stated, “The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked.”

Ralph Neas of the People for the American Way called the remarks, “inappropriate and irresponsible,” given President Bush’s call for national unity. ACLU told the Washington Post they will not dignify the remarks with a comment. Feminist Majority Foundation President, Eleanor Smeal, stated, “This mentality doesn’t surprise us. Unfortunately and tragically, it is consistent with what these Right Wing leaders have said in the past.”
