School Provides Contraception to Kids With Parents’ Approval

An Evanston, Illinois school district will begin distributing free contraceptives in a new program designed to cut pregnancy and STD rates. The program is available only to those students whose parents have agreed to let them participate in the new program.

Evanston District 202 schools will provide prescriptions for birth control pills, and both male and female condoms. Students will also receive instruction about the risks associated with sexual activity.

The Chicago Tribune reported that 35 of the 2,800 students enrolled at Evanston Township High School give birth every year. School officials believe that an additional two dozen become pregnant and seek abortions or suffer miscarriages.
