Senate to Vote on Extreme Anti-Choice Judicial Nominee

The Senate has scheduled a vote for Tuesday on the confirmation of James Leon Holmes to the US District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas. A hard-line anti-abortion activist, Holmes served as president of the Arkansas Right to Life, has worked extensively to overturn Roe v. Wade, and has compared pro-choice advocates to Nazis and abortion to slavery. Leading women’s rights, civil rights, and human rights organizations, including the Feminist Majority, continue to urge Senators to oppose Holmes’ confirmation. The upcoming vote on Holmes is the result of a deal struck in May between Senate Democrats and the White House to allow a full vote in the Senate on 25 supposedly Ônon-controversial’ federal court nominees such as Holmes. In exchange, President Bush promised not to make any more recess appointments of controversial judicial nominees for the remainder of his current term in office.
