Senator John McCain campaigned at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota over the weekend. The rally is infamous for its Miss Buffalo Chip Beauty Pageant, a contest usually featuring scantily clad or topless women. Though Senator McCain discussed gas prices and veterans in his speech at the rally (see the CNN video of Senator McCain’s speech), he also offered his wife as a contestant for Miss Buffalo Chip.
CNN reports that Senator McCain said, “I encouraged Cindy to compete. I told her with a little luck she could be the only woman ever to serve as first lady and Miss Buffalo Chip.” This is not the first time Senator McCain has made comments that demean women. In the past his campaign has dismissed such comments as “authentic McCain.”
