Senators Acquit Clinton

The U.S. Senate acquitted President William Jefferson Clinton of perjury and obstruction of justice today after a five-week trial. Democrats voted strictly on party lines. Ten Republican Senators voted with the Democrats on the perjury charge, and five concurred with Democrats on the obstruction of justice charge.

Republican Senators Collins (ME), Chafee (RI), Gorton (WA), Jeffords (VT), Shelby (AL), Snowe (ME), Specter (PA), Stevens (AL), Warner (VA) and Thompson (TN) voted “not guilty” to the charge of perjury.

Voting “not guilty” on the obstruction of justice charge were Senators Collins, Snowe, Jeffords, Chafee and Specter.

Clinton may still face censure or indictment by Independent Counsel Ken Starr either during or after his presidential term.
