Seven Openly Gay or Lesbian Candidates Seek House Seats

Seven openly lesbian or gay candidates are seeking house seats this year — more than ever before. Two of the candidates are incumbents Barney Frank (D-MA) and Jim Kolbe (R-AZ). Both were elected and reelected several time before revealing their sexual orientation.

The remaining candidates include democrats Christine Kehoe of San Diego, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Susan Tracy of Boston, retired Army National Guard Col. Grethe Cammermeyer of Washington, and Paul Barby of Oklahoma.

Gay and Lesbian Times associate publisher George Biagi, said that anti-gay and lesbian statements made by Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and others has actually helped to raise money for gay and lesbian candidates. “The more ridiculous the statements, the more it helps us,” quipped Biagi.
