Sexual Orientation Club Rejected in Orange County

A school board in Orange County, CA rejected on Tuesday a proposal to form the Gay-Straight Alliance Club at El Modena High School.

Anthony Colin and fellow student Heather Zetin filed a lawsuit last month against the school board after they refused to make a decision on the club for the second time. Although approving school clubs is usually a routine process, board members insisted on a public vote following a community forum. The students’ suit claims the school district violated the federal Equal Access Act, which requires schools to treat all extra-curricular groups equally regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation.

The board gave the students the option of forming a tolerance club as long as it did not include any reference to sexual orientation. “That’s not going to happen,” responded Colin.
