Sudan: First Woman Ambassador Appointed

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has appointed Zeinab Mahmoud Abdel-Kerim to serve as the country’s first woman ambassador. The location of Abdel-Kerim’s post was not immediately disclosed.

The Sudanese Women’s Union applauded Bashir’s appointment, saying it “opens all the doors to women” and “reaffirms their role in the renaissance of the land.” Abdel-Kerim has many years of experience as a diplomat, joining the Foreign Ministry in 1977 and serving at Sudanese embassies in Paris, Doha and Cairo.
