Supreme Court Strikes Down Abortion Ban in Carhart v. Stenberg

The United States Supreme Court in a razor thin 5-4 vote this morning struck down the Nebraska abortion ban. “The narrowness of this vote shows the importance of the upcoming presidential election. The fate of abortion rights for American women in this country for the next 25 years hinges on the outcome of the presidential election in November,” stated Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority.

“Make no mistake about it,” Smeal said, “this abortion ban and similar ones passed in 31 states affect not just late term abortion but all abortions. The narrowness of the vote sends a wake-up call to American women — the next president of the United States, by many experts’ predictions, may have as many as 3-4 Supreme Court appointments.”
