Supreme Court to Hear Critical Feminist Cases

The Supreme Court starts a new term today, set to hear several cases that will affect millions of women throughout the United States. The Court has agreed to hear cases involving the Violence Against Women Act, which gave rape and domestic violence victims the right to sue their attackers for violating their civil rights. Analysts say the Court remains closely divided, usually ruling 5-4 votes. However, several justices may soon retire including, Justices Stevens, Rehnquist, and O’Connor. Ruth Bader Ginsburg has also been in question, as she recovers from colon cancer. Thus, the composition of the Court may soon be drastically changed, emphasizing the importance of the next presidential election.
