Swiss Diplomat Raped In India

A Swiss diplomat was raped after a film festival in India earlier this week. The Swiss woman was abducted and pushed into a car by two men outside a film screening in Delhi, reports the Times of India. A filmmaker was also raped on the same night, and earlier this week a medical school student was gang raped by four presidential guards.

There has been a 22 percent rise in sexual assaults in Delhi this year. According to the BBC, 75 percent of the victims of rape are children, a third of whom are under the age of 12.

According to the BBC, Delhi has one of the highest rates of violence against women in India. The Times of India reports that delays in the legal system ensure rapists that they will not be convicted and work as an encouragement to the criminals. As a result of the sharp increase of rape cases, women parliamentarians have called for the death penalty for rapists.
