Taliban Turns Away Western Diplomats

The Taliban refused to grant western diplomats access to the eight international humanitarian workers from Shelter Now International (SNI), including two Americans, who, along with sixteen Afghan workers, were arrested on charges of promoting Christianity. In violation of international norms, diplomats from the United States, Germany, and Australia were told that the detained workers would not be allowed to speak with representatives of their government or lawyers until the Taliban finishes its investigation. Though the diplomats were able to arrange for the delivery of personal items, the Taliban persisted in denying access to the detained SNI workers, refusing to extend the diplomats’ visas.
