Thousands of girls across the nation accompanied their parents and mentors to the workplace today in celebration of Take Our Daughters to Work Day. Intended to expose girls to careers in every field imaginable, this Ms. Foundation project teaches girls that they can enter any profession they want to, despite challenges that still block women’s progression in the workforce. Girls’ empowerment groups like Girls Inc and Catalyst, which researches women in the business world, point out that women still make up only one percent of board members for Fortune 500 companies, and that 53 percent of girls believe that “people think the most important thing for girls to do is to get married and have children.” Take Our Daughters to Work Day lets girls see that they have other options, and that they can forge their own path to any career they choose.
