On Tuesday, the California state Senate voted 21 to 12 to pass the Toxin-Free Infants and Toddlers Act, which would ban the use of bisphenol A (BPA) from children’s feeding containers. The ban will apply to all baby bottles and sippy cups made or sold after July 1, 2013.
Executive Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles, Martha Dina Arguello, described the vote as “part of reasserting California’s leadership on environmental health protections.” She stressed the importance of the law “since babies and children are most vulnerable to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.”
The bill, sponsored by Senator Fran Pavely (D-Agoura Hills) and Betsy Butler (D-Marina Del Ray), will now go back to the state Assembly for a vote on the Senate’s amendments.
