Turner Gives $1 Billion to U.N.

Cable-television pioneer Ted Turner will give the United Nations $100 million dollars each year for the next ten years, for a total gift of $1 billion.

U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) programs will receive almost $8 million of the $22 million allocated yesterday. Three million will go to a program that produces and distributes reproductive health literature in Bolivia. A program that provides reproductive health care in the Philippines will receive $2.1 million, and programs that seek to end violence against women in Latin America will be given $950,000.

Timothy Worth, president of Turner’s United Nations Foundation, said that educating U.S. citizens about U.N. programs will be another of the Foundation’s priorities.
