U.S. Dept. of Labor Seeks to Inform Women Veterans About Employment Benefits

In an effort to educate women veterans about their employment benefits, the U.S. Dept. of Labor’s Women’s Bureau, U.S. Employment Services and Veterns Employment and Training Service are sponsoring a poster-design contest.

Veterans are encouraged to submit art work which reflects the theme, “Hire a Vet: A Model of Success,” focusing on women veterans. The winning art work will be used to create posters which will be displayed in offices where woman veterans seek employment and retraining.

The unemployment rate of female veterans is 5.9%, slightly higher than the 4.8% unemployment rate among women who have not served in the military. Officials hope that the posters will encourage women veterans to mention their past military duty when looking for a job. U.S. military veterans are given preference in hiring at government agencies as well as in many private sector organizations.
