U.S. House Clamps Down on Date-Rape Drugs

This week the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would tighten federal control over two “date-rape drugs.” According to the bill, GHB, gamma hydorxybutyric acid, and Ketamine, an animal tranquilizer (which have been widely available over the Internet) would be placed in the same regulatory class as other strictly controlled narcotics.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said GHB “has been used in innumerable rapes across the country.” Federal officials claim that there have been 32 deaths and more than 3,500 overdoses linked to the drug since 1990. Other sources place the death toll as high as 90. The bill would make possession of GHB “with the intent to manufacture, distribute or dispense it” illegal, with a maximum 20-year prison sentence for a first offense.
