U.S. Supreme Court Lets Stand Ruling Against Ohio D&X Ban

The U.S. Supreme Court voted to let stand the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that an Ohio ban on D&X abortions was unconstitutional. Justices voted 6-3, refusing to hear arguments in support of the law that would have banned women from obtaining late-term abortions.

“The campaign to pressure Congress and state legislatures to ban abortion procedures has reached a fever pitch,” said Roger Evans of Planned Parenthood. “Thankfully, in courtrooms across this nation cooler heads have prevailed.”

Similar laws banning late-term abortions exist in 19 other states, including: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Utah. Courts have blocked enforcement of the law in 10 of these states.

Chief Justice Rehnquist and Justices Scalia and Thomas all voted to hear arguments in support of the ban.
