UK: Doctors Unaware of Lesbian Healthcare Needs

Researchers in Glasgow, Scotland reported that doctors and healthcare professionals have a “general lack of awareness” about the specific needs of lesbians and bisexual women in the British Journal of Family Planning for the month of October.

Dr. Susan V. Carr and associates from other clinics created the Glasgow Lesbian Health Service in 1995 after researches found that lesbians believed they were “a minority in terms of healthcare,” and reported that 70 percent of lesbians said they would use a lesbian sexual health service.

Investigators reported in the journal that 92 percent of patients said the consultation helped them and 84 percent said they would return to the clinic for healthcare services. The center is the only family planning-based lesbian health care clinic in the United Kingdom.
