United Auto Workers Ask GM and Chrysler to Cover Elective Abortions

The United Auto Workers union (UAW) asked General Motors Corporation (GM) and Chrysler Group to cover voluntary or elective abortions in their health care benefits. The UAW also requested that GM cover contraceptive drugs and devices. According to USA Today, the outcome of these negotiations will help set the agenda for smaller unions that do not have elective abortion coverage.

Women make up about 25 percent of the current active UAW membership, according to United Press International.
