Clayton Lee Waagner, convicted felon, anti-abortion extremist, prison escapee and bank robber, has been identified as the driver of a car in which a pipe bomb was found Friday morning, September 7 in Memphis, Tennessee. Police also found four stolen handguns under the driver’s seat, at least four license plates from different states, and anti-abortion literature.
Waagner is also suspected of carjacking someone Friday afternoon outside of a casino in Robinsonville, Mississippi and driving around with the victim in the vehicle for several hours before releasing him. Police are still searching for the 1995 burgundy Ford Econoline van with a dented passenger-side double door with a Tennessee plate BAE-110 though Waagner may have changed the license plates or abandoned the vehicle.
As reported previously, Waagner escaped from jail on February 22 while awaiting sentencing in a Clinton, Illinois prison following a conviction on federal weapons and stolen vehicle charges. Prior to his arrest, Waagner admitted to conducting surveillance at various abortion clinics around the country and told a reporter that he hoped to kill as many doctors as he could saying, “I figured for every one I killed, I’d get another one to quit.”
Waagner is considered heavily armed and dangerous, possibly armed with a .40-caliber handgun. Waagner’s current whereabouts are unknown and clinics in all areas are urged to be on high alert and use extra safety precautions.
