Utah Lawmakers Plan Anti-Choice Legislation

Several conservative Utah state lawmakers announced plans this week to sponsor anti-choice legislation in the 2009 legislative session. Among other provisions, the new series of bills would ban abortion except in cases of incest, rape, or endangerment of maternal health, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

State Representative Stephen Sandstrom, a primary supporter of the new proposals, said “our hope is that the Supreme Court might make this into a state’s rights issue….I’ve spoken to legislators from twelve other states who are ready to jump on board if this goes through. If we can have Utah lead the way, that would be wonderful,” according to BYU NewsNet.
